Our Story

The Canadian Healthcare Environmental Services
Association (CHESA) was born from a simple but important belief: Canada’s
Healthcare Environmental Services professionals deserve a strong, independent national voice of their own.

For years, Environmental Services professionals across Canada have worked behind the scenes to keep hospitals, long-term care homes, clinics, and other healthcare environments clean, safe, and ready for patient care. Their work is essential to infection prevention, patient safety, workplace safety, and quality healthcare, yet the profession has not always had a national organization dedicated to its unique Canadian needs.

CHESA was created to change that.

Built on the knowledge, experience, and dedication of Environmental Services professionals, CHESA brings together frontline staff, supervisors, managers, educators, leaders, and industry partners who share a commitment to strengthening and advancing the profession.

CHESA builds on the foundation and history of those who came before us while looking toward the future. As a federally incorporated not-for-profit association, CHESA provides the Canadian EVS community with an independent, collaborative, and national voice, focused on education, professional development, networking, advocacy, and resources that reflect Canadian healthcare systems, standards, legislation, and the realities of our profession.

But CHESA is about more than an association, a conference, or a membership.

CHESA is about people.

It is about relationships, trust, and the community we build with one another, our industry partners, and the healthcare facilities we serve. It is about creating a place where people can
connect, share knowledge and experiences, support one another, celebrate successes, and learn together.

We believe strong relationships and collaboration are essential to a strong profession. By bringing people together from across Canada, CHESA creates opportunities to build lasting connections, develop future leaders, and give Environmental Services professionals a greater voice in the future of healthcare.

Our first annual CHESA Conference and AGM in 2026 marked an important milestone in this journey, bringing professionals together to learn, connect, share, and celebrate the important role Environmental Services plays in healthcare.

Environmental Services is not simply housekeeping. Every cleaned and disinfected room, every properly managed spill, and every safe healthcare environment contributes to infection prevention, patient safety, staff safety, and quality care.
